Today was much easier for me than Thursday. For one thing, it followed a rest day so I started rested and fully hydrated. We started much earlier so we got more riding during the cooler part of the day. Also the temperatures were a few degrees lower and there were more frequent rest stops available for Cokes and air conditioning.
On Route 64 east of Perry OK we came across a series of perhaps 100 signs, many of billboard size, planted along the highway on a local farmer's land. While the signs were neatly lettered and brightly colored, the text was pretty incoherent. Seems the farmer feels the county has a 70-year-old vendetta against his family, racially motivated because he is Czech. I didn't read it all, but remember something about local religious fanatics killing his cows through witchcraft. "Why does the sheriff refuse to investigate?"
Only in America!
We stopped in and saw the Pawnee Bill Museum in Pawnee. They
said there was a bike race (probably a century ride) in town that
day, but we never saw any other cyclists. We could have stayed
for the Wild West show rehearsal, but decided to push on to
Feyodi Park campground near Cleveland OK.
