It's been very hot. Today's high was over 100 degrees. I was pretty near bonking when we pulled into Fort Supply this afternoon, due to the heat and the fact we didn't get our usual gargantuan breakfast and lunch. After a rest and a meal I felt better so we pushed on an additional 15 miles to Woodward. Since last night's lodging was free and we did do over a century in 100 degree heat today, we felt we deserved to treat ourselves to a motel tonight. I'm looking forward to my usual omelette, big stack of pancakes and hash browns tomorrow morning.
With the return of hot weather, we are back in the mode of
stopping at every truck stop and gas station to drink a couple of
32-ounce colas. We also get a chance to talk to the locals, who
marvel at our insanity. We did find out where the town of
Slapout got its name. The only store in town (practically the
only building in town) didn't have a large inventory. Whenever
someone would ask for something he didn't have, the owner would
say he was "slap out" of that item. To his chagrin, the name
stuck.
