The photo above is looking back toward Eagle's Nest. The one at the right was taken just past Ute Park.
We had a brief thunderstorm with marble-sized hail hitting our
tents tonight. I am still missing my rain fly, but
fortunately had clothes-pinned my ground cloth over the tent
stays to keep me dry.
We camped in Cimarron, a former major stop for cowboys driving
herds to market on the Santa Fe trail. We checked out the old
St. James Hotel,
where you can still rent a room or get a
reasonably-priced meal. The place is fixed up like a museum with
photos and memorabilia of the many gunmen and lawmen who stayed
there over the years. Supposedly a total of 26 men were killed
in gunfights within its walls.
