Today we visited Monument valley. You've probably seen it
even if you didn't realize it, since many western TV shows and
movies have used it for a setting. We rode from Tsegi, 11 miles
west of Kayenta, up to
Goulding's trading Post
in Monument Valley, and then back again to Kayeta to spend the night.
I took a lot of photos and bought some Indian crafts from roadside stands.
The last message mentioned our most expensive lodgings to date in
Tsegi. Last night was our least expensive. We pitched our tents
behind the all-night laundromat in Kayenta (for free). The
alternative was $129 at the Holiday Inn, which must not be very
good anyway, since it has lost its AAA rating. Where we stayed
was far more interesting anyway. We pitched camp in a little
playgroud behind the laundromat to the curious stares of the
little Indian kids playing on the jungle gym. There are pay
showers at the laundromat patronized mostly by locals who don't
have hot water in their homes. It was well worth the $2.75
apiece, even if the facilities were a little, ah... rustic.
