"The Coke Gods"

Today we pushed on to a tiny wide-place-in-the-road called Tsegi, about 11 miles west of Kayenta, our jumping-off spot for Monument Valley tomorrow. We stopped here because there are only 2 motels in Kayenta, neither very good, and both expensive. We got a nice $50 motel room here at the Anasazi Inn for $108. ;=)

We had planned to make a Coke/food stop in Kaibito this morning, but our eagle-eyed leader (yours truly) missed the turn, and nobody wanted to backtrack (up a hill). So we drank warm water and ate apples and crackers with peanut butter while sitting in the desert sun by the side of the road. And attracting a prodigious quantity of ants in the process.

Boy that missing Coke sure would have tasted good! While stopped for a rest in one of the very few shady spots along desolate AZ highway 98, Adam spontaneously broke into an impromptu dance to try to appease the Indian Coke Gods: "Aya hoya, Coca-Cola..." Sure enough, 5 miles further down the road we came upon an Indian roadside stand selling jewellry etc. They had an ice chest full of cold sodas for 75 cents apiece! We had two each.

For dinner tonight at the motel greasy spoon, I had a big burger with fries, salad, 4 glasses of iced tea, two pieces of Navajo fried bread, and pecan pie a la mode for dessert. Who ever said that cyclists are healthy?
