"A Slow Day"

Entering Zion National Park

(Frank) Both Alan and I felt bad today. In the morning Alan felt fairly good, and I had trouble eating. Just wasn't hungry, and very weak. We left St. George anyway just planning to go slow. By the time we had reached Zion, 45 miles, both Alan and I felt bad. Both struggled through lunch and did very little sight-seeing. After taking short naps, I started feeling much better, but Alan didn't improve. We will have to see what tomorrow brings. We are planning another short ride, but will have a moderate amount of climbing (some very steep). I ate a good dinner, but Alan couldn't.

Deer grazing under trees in campground Zion was very hot, well over 100 degrees F. After a dip in the river, the clothes we were wearing were dry in about 30 minutes. Tomorrow we climb higher, so it will hopefully be cooler. We also have to go through a tunnel that is over 1 mile long. Bicycles are no longer allowed in that tunnel, so we will need to flag down a truck or get help from the rangers. The rangers are trying to be less than helpful on this one.

Our camp site is next to a Mulberry tree. We have had as many as 17 deer under that tree at one time eating the berrys that have fallen.
