Rumble strips along Arizona Hwy 89
Rumble strips along Arizona Hwy 89.
Narrow ones like these close to the lane line are
fine for cycling. The wider ones that are placed right
where a cyclist wants to ride make life very difficult.

(Frank) Alan's stomach was upset this morning so we made reservations on the shuttle to St. George. I gave Pete & Adam my two spare tubes and my pump since they use Shrader valves.

12:29:13 pm. Just passed Adam & Pete. They were along the side of the road pumping up a tire. They were about 20 miles into today's ride. It turns out this was a significent day to not ride. Our route crossed the first time zone, left Nevada, entered and left Arizona, then entered Utah.

Once in St. George, I went to the local bicycle store to find Pete and Adam. They were sure easy to find. It turns out Pete had a slow leak in his rear tire, and he had to add air several times. He did not get any new flats. Some of the country they rode through was beautiful. Lots of banded colors, rivers, green's on reds etc. Their problem was that Arizona's roads either had "rumble strips" (deep cuts all the way across the shoulder to wake up sleeping drivers), or a very rough chip seal. They were very happy when they came to the Utah border and the roads improved. After Zion we drop back into Arizona to visit the Grand Canyon. Hopefully, those roads will be better.
