1996 Cross-Country Tour. Day 13, May 30, Rest day in Las Vegas NV

Thursday May 30, Rest day in Las Vegas NV

(Frank) We are spending the day in Las Vegas. The only things we have to do are get patches and then finally meet Adam and Pete.

Night shot from the air of the Las Vegas 'strip' Although I have really enjoyed staying with Renee and her family, I will be very happy to leave this town. We are back to dealing with angry drivers. It had been so nice riding without worrying about what some motorist will try. But in Las Vegas they try and squeeze by if you ride as far right as possible, and try to force you over if you ride further left. I ended up riding much further to the left than normal, and that seemed to be safest. Also drivers HAVE to pass you just before turning right. On the way to Renee's house we had 3 cars squealing their tires trying to turn in front of us. Never take your hands off the brakes in this town.

I'm also developing a little knee problem. When my bottom bracket slid out I finished the ride by pushing the pedals sideways while riding. I glued the sealed bearings back in, but the next morning my knee hurt and has been getting worse. Hopefully this rest day and time in the hot tub will help. If I ever get another touring bike it won't have any non-standard bicycle components like the Klein sealed bottom bracket. I had it replaced just before leaving, but the press fit is now loose. Nothing I can do but use glue and hope. It's not comfortable taking off with a defective design that CANNOT be serviced at normal bike shops.
